COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mullet Bar is holding a members-only fundraiser today for American Fish Company after a mass shooting in Southport left three dead and five injured last Saturday—proceeds will be donated to Southport Cares as a larger public event is set for Oct. 18.  WECT
  • A special luncheon was held in downtown Wilmington on Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and honor local veterans. Liberty Senior Living recognized eight veterans by awarding each one a challenge coin from the World War II Museum and another from the company, with four veterans honored at the Pilot House and four at Bradley Creek at Carolina Bay and The Commons at Brightmore.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Imelda is tracking east and is expected to bring heavy rains with 2 to 4 inches today through Tuesday—hazardous marine conditions and a moderate risk of rip currents remain at Wilmington beaches.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The North Carolina Coastal Federation will hold a wetland planting event at Carolina Beach State Park on Oct. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m.—volunteers will remove invasive species, build oyster reefs, and plant native species in muddy, wet, and hot conditions with all supplies provided on-site. The event will help restore local wetlands and improve water quality in the Lower Cape Fear River region.  WECT
  • State regulators approved new dust control plans for Enviva and Basaga International at the Port of Wilmington to cut wood dust pollution following community complaints. Both companies must be in compliance by Oct. 18—NCDEQ will inspect and document any new dust incidents.  Port City Daily

  • Deborah Dicks Maxwell of Wilmington was reelected for her third term as president of the NC NAACP—she is the first woman to lead the organization and delegates cast their votes at the 82nd State Convention across the state.  WECT
  • Billy Craig, a former Wilmington police officer and FBI task force officer who now works as a private investigator, real estate broker and adjunct professor at Cape Fear Community College, is seeking the mayor’s seat with a focus on public safety, infrastructure and taxes—he plans to use community partnerships and whistle-blower protections as he runs in a nonpartisan race against incumbent Bill Saffo and former county commissioner Jonathan Barfield.  Port City Daily
  • The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles has begun certifying private driver education schools to administer road tests for teenagers seeking a Level 2 Limited Provisional License, which should reduce wait times by letting teens take their driving exam outside of NCDMV offices—private schools will set their own test fees while the final licensing process remains at NCDMV offices.  WECT
  • A new law to stop price gouging is now in effect after Governor Josh Stein declared an emergency because of Tropical Storm Imelda. Businesses must show any price increases, and the law will last for 30 days from Sept. 27.  FOX Wilmington
  • A new law is now in effect to stop price gouging after Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency for Tropical Storm Imelda on Sept 27. The law, which will remain in effect for 30 days, requires businesses to show any price increases and lets residents report suspected violations—protecting customers during emergencies.  WECT
