- ➤ Live Oak Bank, Plastic Ocean Project, and Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity planted trees on Oct. 7 at the new affordable housing site in Wilmington—this project aimed to boost local green space. WECT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A lane on Market Street is closing this evening for emergency sewer repairs as the right-hand northbound lane in the 8100 block will be shut at 7 p.m. Traffic will move to the inner northbound lane—Hays Lane will remain open for turning and repairs are expected to last at least five hours. WECT
- ➤ North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is advising residents to inspect their lithium-ion devices during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5—11 to prevent home fires. He urged buyers to choose listed products, charge safely on hard surfaces, and dispose of old batteries at safe recycling stations. WWAY
- ➤ The New Hanover County School Board voted 5-1 to approve a $320 million bond recommendation for major construction and renovation projects at several schools, including a new Trask Middle School, upgrades at New Hanover High School, and replacements for Pine Valley Elementary and Mary C. Williams Elementary—projects set to benefit the entire district. County commissioners will next decide whether to bring the proposal before voters. WECT
- ➤ The NCDOT stated the cost to extend Independence Boulevard in Wilmington has climbed to $424.6 million from $193 million due to inflation, utility relocation, construction costs and right-of-way acquisition — the 1.7-mile project aims to ease traffic congestion. Planning studies are underway with a draft environmental impact statement expected this fall and final details to come in winter 2026-2027. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ The NCDMV announced that drivers without a REAL ID can renew their licenses online again after Senate Bill 245 was signed last week to ease office wait times. New online services for REAL ID holders and teen drivers will be available in the coming weeks — a change that may process up to 400,000 transactions online. WECT
- ➤ Bill McHugh, an attorney and contract manager on Leland Town Council, is seeking re-election to build on his work with a flooding ordinance (his idea), low taxes, and safer roads as the Nov. 4 election nears. - ➤ The Alzheimer’s Association will hold its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at 720 Hamilton Drive this November—check-in begins on Nov 1 at 9 a.m. with a Promise Garden ceremony at 10 a.m. to honor the over 210,000 people affected by the disease along with 381,000 caregivers in North Carolina.
