COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southport Cares, a local non-profit led by Fire Chief Charles Drew, is offering financial support to victims and displaced workers after a gunman killed three and injured five at American Fish Company on Sept. 27, with suspect Nigel Edge now in jail awaiting a court hearing on Oct. 13 — the group was created by first responders during the COVID crisis and has raised over $33K to help neighbors.  WECT

  • Emmy-winning Simpsons writer Bill Oakley is hosting a charity dinner at Kindred in Carolina Beach this Saturday. The event, called An American Culinary Curiosity, will serve seven surprise courses inspired by regional dishes—tickets include VIP options and proceeds will benefit Ocean Cure.  WWAY
  • The Cameron Art Museum will host CAM: Veterans Celebration Community Day on November 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees will honor Black veterans with storytelling, music, family activities, and living history demonstrations—beginning with reenactor camps at 10 a.m. and followed by performances throughout the day.  FOX Wilmington
  • Fried Fruit Art Space invites the public to view the 'Embodiment' art exhibit featuring sculptures and drawings by Andi Steele and Louise Radochonski on display until Nov. 21—an exhibit that shows metal shapes and drawn figures reflecting life’s past and present. A public artist panel with these artists and Hannah Banciella will be held on Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. at UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building Room 2033—followed by an opening reception on Oct. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. with an outdoor screening of performance art videos from Dislocated/Dislocada 2025.  WECT

  • The Airlie Gardens Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors meeting will now be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Garden Services Center at Airlie Gardens.  New Hanover County
  • Crews are repairing a major water main break in Kure Beach on the 1300 block of Fort Fisher Boulevard South — residents near Ocean Dunes may face no water or low pressure. Town officials are unsure how long the repairs will take.  WECT
  • Wilmington City Council passed a camping rule that stops sleeping on city property between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. with a 4 to 3 vote; the rule went into effect immediately—raising local debate over public safety and homelessness.  WHQR
  • Lynn Barbee, CIO of Atlantic Corporation, is running for re-election as Carolina Beach mayor in the upcoming municipal race where he faces candidate Youssef Hassan—he served on the town council since 2019 and will focus on completing infrastructure improvements and enhancing public safety. Early voting runs from Oct 16 to Nov 1 with Election Day on Nov 4.  Port City Daily
  • New Hanover County will offer free Medicare Open Enrollment assistance for seniors through the SHIIP program from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 to help them review changes in Part D and Part C plans.   • The City of Wilmington is inviting residents to give input for a $450,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant application to replace the Lions Bridge in Greenfield Park — a public meeting is scheduled for Nov. 1 at 1941 Amphitheater Drive from noon to 1:30, with a free concert following and an online survey available for comments.  FOX Wilmington
