COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Toys for Tots drive has started along Cape Fear as local volunteers set up donation boxes in Brunswick and New Hanover counties to collect gifts for children in need before the holidays. Organizers in New Hanover County will deploy about 400 boxes around Halloween and begin picking them up on Dec 15 so that gifts can be sorted in time.  WWAY
  • October is National Farm to School Month and North Carolina is celebrating the NC Crunch event as local farmers' markets offer fresh produce like winter squash & apples; the official Crunch Day is Oct 22 at noon, inviting families & schools to taste the fall harvest.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Wilmington’s Domestic Shelter and Services received a $1.4 million grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment — the boost will help hire staff and expand outreach after government funding fell. The nonprofit now relies more on private donors and fundraisers to serve people escaping domestic abuse in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender and Columbus counties.  Port City Daily
  • Heidi’s Hope for Homeless Animals & Coastal Kia will host Woofstock 2025 on Oct. 12 from 12 to 4 p.m. where local animal rescue groups will bring 100 adoptable animals that are spayed/neutered & microchipped.  WECT
  • Brunswick Beer and Cider will host its third annual 'Applearchy' cider tasting festival on November 1 in Leland—offering a variety of ciders, fruit beers, live music, vendor shops, and desserts—and tickets start at $35 with a 5-ounce tasting glass included.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College Theater Program will hold a costume sale on October 16th and 17th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the courtyard behind the Joe and Barbara Schwartz Center — cash and credit card payments will be accepted at the event.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews have begun mobilizing at Freeman Park in Carolina Beach for the town’s Coastal Storm Risk Management dredging project. Officials will hold a public meeting with the US Army Corps of Engineers in the coming weeks — giving residents a chance to review the project scope and timeline.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Novant Health will host a CNA hiring event on Oct. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital Lobby in Wilmington+ hiring leaders will conduct on-site interviews and applicants are encouraged to apply online to speed the hiring process.  WECT
  • Comfort Keepers of Wilmington will host its second annual Pickleball Tournament and Fundraiser in Leland on Oct. 18 from 4-8 p.m. to support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Stop Alzheimer’s Now programs—registration is sold out with a waitlist available and pro pickleball player Henry Boyle scheduled to attend.  WECT
