COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Harrelson Center launched a Housing Navigation Program in late spring to help New Hanover County residents keep their homes by managing overdue bills and unexpected expenses — the program completed its first 90-day cycle with 10 clients, including renters and homeowners. Manager Nikki McLaurin meets with clients weekly to review budgets and credit, and the initiative is funded by a state grant to run for three years — the program also partners with local services to offer full support.  Port City Daily
  • The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will hold its first Motorcycle Flame Ride to benefit the Special Olympics in partnership with the NC Red Knights at Cape Fear Community College North Campus on Nov. 1; registration begins at 9 a.m. and rides start at 10:30 a.m.—drivers pay $40 and riders pay $20.  FOX Wilmington

EDUCATION NEWS

  • StarNews is holding its weekly Student of the Week contest for high schools in New Hanover — with nominees Hayley Ervin, Jasiah Owens, and Ellen Velempini recognized for academic achievement and community service — and online voting will close at 11 a.m. on Oct. 16 when the winner will be announced.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Members of the Sea Cadets and Navy League Cadet Corps raised 150 American flags aboard the Battleship North Carolina on October 13 in honor of the Navy's 250th anniversary—another 100 flags will be raised on November 10 in honor of the U.S. Marine Corps.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The NCDOT will dedicate the NC 904 bridge on the Columbus-Robeson County border spanning the Lumber River to late Assistant Chief Lenneau D. Hammond on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.—the ceremony will be held outside Fair Bluff Baptist Church with Representative Brenden Jones and Chamber of Commerce member Al Leonard in attendance.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local organizations will host a free lunch and learn on Alzheimer’s at Hampstead Baptist Church on Oct. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event, organized by the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, LifeCare Memory Partners, Cape Fear Area Agency on Aging and AARP, will discuss differences between Alzheimer’s and dementia and offer tips to maintain brain health.  FOX Wilmington
  • The Wilmington Chapter of Breakthrough T1D will host its Walk for a Cure event on November 15 at Long Leaf Park to raise funds for research, advocacy and improved care for type 1 diabetes. (Check-in opens at 9 a.m.) (The walk starts at 10:30 a.m.)  WECT
  • The American Cancer Society will hold the second annual Pink Tide 5K walk at Lake Park in Carolina Beach on Oct 18—participants are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. and Jonathan Reed, a breast cancer survivor, will speak as the event marks 40 years of breast cancer awareness.  WECT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new affordable housing complex opened Monday at 2346 Carolina Beach Road with 270 apartments for residents earning less than $47,000 per year. City officials invested over $4 million of public funds to support the $75 million project—receiving 450 applications for the remaining units.  WWAY
