COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Endowment announced its Community Grants Program will increase funding next year with maximum awards raised from $5,000 to $15,000 and a cap increased to $1 million—supporting local organizations through two competitive cycles. Applications for the first cycle open early next year and a second cycle will start in fall.  Port City Daily
  • Wilmington Rises Against Hunger will organize a meal packaging campaign at St. James Episcopal Parish Church on Oct. 18 to pack over 50,000 meals for families worldwide—organizers need 300 volunteers and offer shifts from 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.  WECT

  • Flaming Amy’s Restaurant Family announced on its Facebook post that the Carolina Beach location will close on Oct. 31 after one last Churkeychanga Season celebration on Pleasure Island—staff will serve only to-go orders starting Nov. 1 from Thursday to Saturday between 4 and 8 p.m.  WECT
  • Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn announced it will close its Carolina Beach location on October 31—after celebrating one last Churkeychanga Season—while it shifts to serving hot to-go Churkeychangas from November 1 and focuses on its long-time Oleander Drive location. Customers can visit during regular hours until the closing date to enjoy their favorite items.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The second annual Cape Fear Book Festival will be held at the Main Library in downtown Wilmington from November 15 to 16—Saturday will feature WriteOn! Workshops with a keynote by award winning author Kianna Alexander. Sunday will have the Cover-to-Cover Book Sale—free and open to the public with work from more than 65 local vendors from 2 to 5 p.m.  New Hanover County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wrightsville Beach officials said that strong storms and king tides carved sand escarpments up to 6 feet tall, erasing progress from the 2024 renourishment project. Crews are grading temporary ramps for safe beach access this week—safety remains their top priority as they monitor conditions daily.  WECT
  • Erosion is washing away large parts of Snow's Cut shoreline as tides and boat wakes gradually remove sand from the waterway created in the late 1920s. The Army Corps of Engineers plans to stabilize 7,500 feet of the shore at a cost of $15 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—officials will decide on the contract by early 2026.  Wilmington Star-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina will take place on Saturday, October 25 in Wilmington, marking its 16th year and expecting 3,000 athletes and over 7,000 visitors. The race will include a 1.2-mile swim from Hanover Seaside Club, a 56-mile bike ride through rural roads, and a 13.1-mile run finishing at Water Street Park — with about 1,200 volunteers supporting the event.  WWAY
