- ➤ Fall food events offer locals a taste of the season — the Lighthouse Beer and Wine Festival on October 17 and 18 at Live Oak Bank Pavilion will serve craft beers, wines, and small plates that benefit a local charity, while the Rotary Club’s Oysters in October at Burgwin-Wright House, Taste of Wrightsville Beach on November 1 at Bluewater Grill’s lot, and the NC Oyster & Seafood Celebration at Neff’s Seabird on November 4 and 5 promise varied dining and drink experiences. - ➤ Two festivals are scheduled this weekend at Wilmington’s Live Oak Bank Amphitheater (a Friday upscale event featuring chefs, oysters, champagne, wine, and beer, and a Saturday festival with over 100 breweries, wineries, food trucks, and live music) to raise funds for the Carousel Center (a child advocacy center aiding children who have experienced abuse) organized by Lighthouse Beer and Wine. - ➤ Lower Cape Fear LifeCare will host its first Jingle & Joy Gala on Dec. 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Aloft Wilmington at Coastline Center—an event replacing the paused Festival of Trees, with proceeds going to support care for families and individuals in the region—featuring a gourmet dinner, cocktails, live music, dancing and exclusive auctions. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Domestic Violence Shelter officials say they help up to 50 victims weekly and over 1,000 people yearly amid a rise in domestic abuse, with director Madi Spada guiding clients through the legal process. The shelter will host its annual Take Back the Night march starting at 6:30 p.m. at Water Street Park tonight—offering community members a chance to seek help and honor survivors. WECT

- ➤ Today, Wilmington-area chefs and food businesses are featured at the NC State Fair’s Got to Be NC Agriculture Pavilion—local kitchens host live cooking demos, a television style contest with mystery ingredients, and displays of regional spirits and sauces. Chef Mauricio Huarcaya will appear at 3 p.m. on Oct. 23 while James Beard—nominated Chef Keith Rhodes is set to demonstrate seafood on Oct. 26, adding local flavor to the fair. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ Cape Fear Community College will host a Financial Aid and FAFSA Night on October 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Union Station (room 212) where students will get step-by-step help filling out the FAFSA form; attendees should bring FSA IDs and tax returns (documentation required) to access scholarship information. - ➤ The Fort Fisher Aquarium will host its Boo! to Trash Beach Cleanup event on Oct. 25 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Carolina Beach Pier—volunteers will wear Halloween costumes and bring reusable water bottles and gloves to help care for the ocean. FOX Wilmington

- ➤ Jeremy Bradford, whose son died from a fentanyl overdose in 2023, turned his loss into purpose by founding the 2 Out Rally Foundation to educate parents and youth—hoping to help lower overdose deaths. North Carolina data shows daily overdose deaths fell from 12 in 2023 to 8 in 2024, and local emergency room visits have also declined. WECT
- ➤ New Hanover County has opened the application portal for the Mental Health Fellows Program for graduate students studying to be psychiatric nurse practitioners or mental health providers.
