- ➤ The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Wilmington has seen rising demand due to job losses and reduced access to previous resources. - ➤ The Cameron Art Museum will launch CAM After Dark: The Art of Glass and Light on Nov 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. to celebrate two new exhibits featuring works by Frederick G. Kahl and Meredith Connelly. - ➤ Cape Fear Community College will host a free Financial Aid and FAFSA Night on October 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in room 212 at Union Station to help high school, current, and prospective students plus families complete their FAFSA and learn about CFCC programs. WWAY
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College is building a custom 26-metre research vessel — designed by Incat Crowther — at Midship Marine’s shipyard in Louisiana. The vessel will support its Marine Technology program for multi-day research on the Cape Fear River system and up to 100 nautical miles offshore. WWAY

- ➤ Protesters from Save Sledge Forest gathered outside the courthouse on October 6 to oppose Copper Builders' Hilton Bluffs project, warning that 4,000 new units could add heavy traffic, flooding, and old pollution risks from GE's past activities. Developers say their plans include better roads and modern stormwater systems—measures that meet county rules, even as advocates push to stop the project with over 12,000 signatures. WHQR
- ➤ The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of River Road in Wilmington for resurfacing work starting Sunday night, October 19—shutting down the roundabout at River Road and Sanders Road nightly from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. until full reopening at 6 a.m. Friday, October 24. WWAY
- ➤ Leaders and project partners will attend the grand opening of Wilmington’s new Fire Station at Riverlights on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at 4455 River Rd + a ceremonial fire hose uncoupling will lead to an open house with station tours. WECT
- ➤ The NCDOT announced that River Road near the roundabout at River Road and Sanders Road will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. — until Oct. 24 — for resurfacing work starting Oct. 19, and drivers are advised to follow the signed detour route. WECT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Medicaid providers in southeastern North Carolina are facing funding cuts during a 17-day federal shutdown as state reimbursements drop by 3 to 10 percent because of a budget shortfall. MedNorth and Cape Fear Clinic are planning for fewer funds and a rise in uninsured patients—local groups await state and federal decisions that may affect Medicaid expansion and ACA support. - ➤ After nearly 120 days in the hospital, baby Sway goes home with his family after being born prematurely via an emergency C-section in June and weighing only one-pound-four ounces.
