  • Ocean Isle Beach's 44th annual Oyster Festival ended Sunday after a two-day celebration that featured artisans—live music and oysters.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UNCW researchers are working at the Shellfish Research Hatchery to breed disease-resistant oysters for local farmers impacted by recent mass die-offs—testing various oyster lines for improved survival against high salinity and disease. The 12,000‑square‑foot facility is supporting efforts to restore coastal water quality and boost the region's mariculture industry—an important step for the area's future.  Wilmington Star-News

  • On Friday, Baby Sway Smith left the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Betty H. Cameron NICU in Wilmington after 118 days of care and a farewell bubble parade. His mother Candis Smith said she felt excited and nervous as she took her baby home on oxygen — a sign of his recovery.  WWAY
  • Leland town officials are holding an emergency meeting today over a large open burn along Highway 17 near a future Publix as residents report heavy smoke that poses a health risk for seniors with respiratory issues.
