  • Lip Sync for the Cure returns downtown this weekend at Savard Beer and Board with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and performances starting at 6:30 p.m. as local performers compete in two rounds for cash prizes & all proceeds go to the Roc Solid Foundation to support children with cancer.  WWAY
  • Tickets for the Enchanted Airlie event at Airlie Gardens go on sale Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.—visitors must purchase tickets ahead as reserved time slots from Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 1-21 may sell out quickly.  WECT

  • Fire crews battled a house fire in Oak Island yesterday morning—WECT reported photos of the incident as local fire departments worked to obtain more details.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Samara Joy will perform at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center next year on March 28 at 7 p.m.—members can buy tickets today at 10 a.m. while the general public will have access at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23.  WECT
  • The 19th Cape Fear Kite Festival will take place at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area in November and will feature vibrant kite displays—from large inflatables to nimble designs—that create artful skies & offer family-friendly activities along the Carolina coast. Attendees can enjoy a sneak-peek flight at Kure Beach Pier on November 7, free admission, shuttle service from Blakeslee Air Force Base Recreation Area on November 8 and 9, live music, and food trucks.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Sunset Park have complained for years about sawdust that filled the air like wooden snow, so the DEQ approved fugitive dust control plans for Enviva Pallets and Basaga International at Wilmington’s port—Enviva must implement its plan by Oct. 22 and Basaga by Nov. 2—bringing relief as neighbors report cleaner air.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Novant Health announced plans to expand care in Brunswick County by building a new 20-bed hospital with a 24/7 emergency room along U.S. 74/76 in Leland — plus a free-standing emergency room in Carolina Shores—and they will also upgrade the Bolivia campus with a larger MRI facility and a new cardiac catheterization lab as certificate-of-need applications have been submitted.  WECT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nearly 3000 athletes will compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon this weekend at Wrightsville Beach and finish across the Battleship NC on Oct. 25. Race Director Sami Winter said competitors from France, Peru and other countries will join to race a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run that highlights our local hospitality.  WECT
  • Top female college golfers from 57 schools will compete at Landfall Country Club this weekend—teams begin the college/amateur round on Oct. 23 at 12:30 p.m. and the collegiate round runs from Oct. 24-26 to help raise funds for UNCW Women’s Golf programs with more than $250,000 already raised.  WECT
