- ➤ The Sew Crafty Club at Cape Fear Community College has sewn over 50 blankets for NICU babies at New Hanover Regional Medical Center—students, including one who works at the hospital, balanced classes and jobs to complete the heartfelt project. WWAY
- ➤ Scuba Now will host the Paws for a Cause adoption event on November 21 at Independence Mall as adoptable dogs from Adopt an Angel and Monty's Home are available from noon to 3 p.m. The event will also include a slot machine fundraiser—participants donate $10 for three spins to win prizes that will benefit the shelters. - ➤ Wilmington Police warned residents that scammers send fake city invoices in phishing emails urging money wiring + the department advises avoiding clicks on suspicious links or attachments + anyone who suspects a scam should report it immediately. WECT

- ➤ The NC Writers’ Network has opened registration for its 40th anniversary fall conference in Wrightsville Beach scheduled for November 7 to 9 at the Holiday Inn Resort. The weekend will offer workshops, readings, and networking sessions led by published authors and industry professionals, and registration will close on Oct. 31. WECT

- ➤ The Army Corps of Engineers surveyed storm damage at Wrightsville Beach Tuesday — severe erosion from a nor’easter and king tides reshaped the shoreline. Officials said the next beach renourishment will be planned for 2027 once federal funds are secured. WECT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wilmington International Airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team will be performing live fire exercises until Friday — if you see smoke or flames near the airfield, it is part of the training — officials said. WWAY
- ➤ At a special meeting on Oct 20, Leland Town Council banned commercial land clearing burns after residents complained about smoky skies from a future shopping center site—residents had long raised concerns—and passed an ordinance that allows only yard debris burns. The ordinance—imposing $500 daily fines per violation—will be explained in a workshop on Nov 10 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Wilmington International Airport has begun its second phase of upgrades, which will add a new 6-lane curbside, large parking deck, expanded parking lots, and an underground tunnel to handle growing passenger numbers—completion is expected in spring with plans to double parking capacity. Airport fire officials are also holding drills this week—practicing responses from external fire threats to airplane incidents to ensure readiness as construction continues. WWAY
