COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Carolina Beach Fire Department is hosting its annual barbecue fundraiser today at 9 Dow Road from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—plates cost $12 with barbecue, beans, slaw, hush puppies and a drink to support the Carolina Beach Firefighters Association.  WECT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Frontier Scientific Solutions will soon launch a new air corridor that links Wilmington International Airport with Shannon Airport in Ireland — a route made for shipping life sciences items. The service — using wide-body Boeing 767 freighters with real-time temperature monitoring — will run three days a week and is expected to create about 350 jobs over the next three to five years.  WWAY
  • Boot Barn, a national retailer for boots and western wear, is under construction at Hanover Center at 3501 Oleander Dr. in Wilmington and is expected to open in the first quarter next year — the store will be located next to Homesense and marks its first location in the area.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thalian Hall in Wilmington is hosting a 50th anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show just in time for Halloween, with regular showings from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26 and a special live shadowcast screening today at 7:30 p.m. The event will include a costume contest and giveaways—continuing the film’s tradition of interactive fun.  WECT
  • The Children’s Museum of Wilmington will launch its first Eek! Week festival to celebrate Halloween with daily hands-on programs at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. starting Tuesday. The event, held on Orange Street, will culminate Friday with a costume celebration—featuring trick-or-treat stations and pumpkin crafts—while tickets cost $15 for non-members and $5 for members.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hanover County Schools will host a substitute hiring event on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — staff will assist applicants with applying, interviewing, and completing new hire paperwork at the Board of Education Center at 1805 S 13th St.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts at the N.C. Cooperative Extension at Oleander Drive advised local residents to check their irrigation systems for broken nozzles, clogged filters, and leaks that cause bare patches on lawns. Homeowners should inspect their systems regularly to avoid water waste and further lawn damage—early fixes can save time and money.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NC Governor’s Highway Safety Program is launching its annual Halloween Booze It and Lose It campaign ahead of Halloween, and agencies will increase patrols and set up sobriety checkpoints starting Oct. 27—following last year’s 588 DWI arrests, officials urge drivers to plan ahead with designated sober drivers.  WECT
  • Drivers in northern New Hanover County face a three-month closure of Blue Clay Road beginning next week for utility installation by an NCDOT contractor—detours via North College Road and Parmele Road will ease traffic and officials advise caution.  WWAY
  • Leaders and experts will gather in Leland next week at Crosswinds Church for a two-day conference to discuss strategies to end human trafficking — the event offers a Community Awareness Night on Oct 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a training session for service providers on Oct 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  WECT
  • The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program kicked off its Halloween Booze It & Lose It campaign Friday at the State Fair’s Safety City exhibit+ officials warned that drinking and driving is dangerous. Starting Monday+ law enforcement in all 100 counties will boost patrols and set up sobriety checkpoints through November 2 to deter impaired driving.  WWAY

  • In Leland, a favorite restaurant moved to a new spot and a growing wine shop expanded into a larger space with a full bar, dining room, and private event area—owners plan a grand opening event soon. A Carolina Beach burrito spot will close at month end while a drive-through Wilmington Greek Festival and upcoming chef events offer more food choices.  Wilmington Star-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Logan Homes is developing Brookfield Branch in Hampstead with 280 new homes across from South Topsail Elementary School and has already sold about 30 units. The community will add an amenity center with a pool, clubhouse, and playground that will start construction in February and finish in six to seven months—full project completion is expected in three years.  Wilmington Star-News

  • More than 500 athletes and many volunteers gathered at Legion Stadium for the fall Special Olympics games where kids played soccer and danced at six different stations. Program coordinator Brooke Deamaral said the event helped children feel part of the sports world—building their confidence through adapted activities.  WECT
