COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilmington Fire Department is handing out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at several fire stations (such as Headquarters at 801 Market Street and Station 2 at 3403 Park Avenue) and warns visitors not to park in front of bay doors (to keep emergency routes open).  FOX Wilmington

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pine Valley Market is set to open a new breakfast and lunch location in Wrightsville Beach on Nov. 5—owners renovated the former Sweet n Savory Cafe—and will host a ribbon-cutting on Nov. 11 to mark the new space.  Port City Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Burgaw Lions Club invites community members to honor artist Donald Fred Tornow Jr. An exhibition of his work will be shown at the Pender Arts Council on Nov. 8 from 2—6 p.m., and a graveside memorial service will be held at Maxwell Cemetery on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.  WECT
  • Just Do GOOD Entertainment announced the world premiere of Air Angels: Flight Helene at Cameo Art House Theatre in Fayetteville on November 11—featuring a 3 p.m. show for military, veterans and first responders and a 6 p.m. red carpet event for the public—where Wilmington Health cardiologist Dr. Craig McCotter, who used his Robinson Helicopter R-44 Clipper II to help hurricane victims, will be honored. The film will debut early next year on a subscriber-based streaming service yet to be named.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Coastal Federation and tech firm Natrx are using a new AI model and satellite images to map 4,000 square miles of coastal wetlands for erosion tracking and carbon management. The partnership will guide surveyors to high-risk marshes — including Bald Head Island, Oak Island, and Southport — as they plan restoration steps in the coming months.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NC Department of Health and Human Services announced that if the federal shutdown continues, November SNAP benefits for 1.4 million recipients will be delayed while October benefits remain on schedule—officials said the agency has not received the necessary federal funds and urged the USDA to deploy contingency funds to prevent hunger. Residents can check benefit balances online or by calling support for more details.  WECT
  • City crews resumed work near the Convention Center on the downtown Riverwalk, replacing decking and planning to work south until early 2026—then moving to complete work on Ann Street.  FOX Wilmington

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new NC State study released Monday found high levels of toxic short-chain PFAS chemicals in blood samples from 119 Wilmington residents—these chemicals include TFA and PFMOAA and add to concerns over local industrial contamination. Researchers linked the Chemours Fayetteville Works Plant to the pollution in the Cape Fear River and plan to test newer samples for current exposure levels.  FOX Wilmington

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • D.W. Alchemists opened in late summer at 1826 Carolina Beach Road and offers alcohol-free, plant-based elixirs meant to boost health and social connection — the lounge hosts weekly open mics and monthly art markets with drinks priced between $10 and $15. Owner and mixologist Ben Poppel said the venue is designed as an alternative to alcohol-driven nightlife.  Wilmington Star-News
