COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will give away over 1,400 native trees at Legion Stadium on Friday, Dec. 5 from noon to 5 p.m.—certified arborists will be on site to answer questions about planting and care.  FOX Wilmington
  • Adults 55 and older will be invited to pick up a free warm Thanksgiving lunch at the Martin Luther King Community Center on Nov. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The drive-thru event will offer a safe meal for seniors — a key part of the City's holiday plans.  WECT
  • Mustaches for Kids is starting its annual growing season next week with a Shave Day event on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at Wilmington Brewing Company — more than 50 volunteers will help raise funds for local children’s charities with a goal of $1 million.  WECT
  • The Endowment is awarding eight new grants totaling more than $17 million for initial disbursement in 2025 or 2026 to expand healthcare access, strengthen youth and family services, support affordable housing and preserve historic resources in New Hanover County. The grants add to a total of 167 awards worth over $58 million that benefit the local community.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will host a one-stop enrollment event on Tuesday, November 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Union Station on N. Front Street in Wilmington—students can complete admission, residency, financial aid, and class registration steps with staff available to guide high school graduates and career changers.  WWAY
  • UNCW will test its emergency alert system next week to make sure students and staff get emergency messages. The test will occur at noon on Nov. 6 using campus emails, text messages, calls, and pop-up notifications (students are automatically registered).  WECT
  • Bus drivers in New Hanover Schools said that cars often pass stopped buses, putting children at risk as they cross the road. The district will add stop arm cameras to record violations and help police enforce a $500 fine and five-point penalty (a measure to reduce dangerous driving).  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Natrx has partnered with the NC Coastal Federation to use its Assess toolset powered by advanced AI to study over 4,000 square miles of coastal land — the project will deliver key data within a year to guide restoration efforts along the shoreline.  WECT
  • The public is invited to an open house and presentation focused on addressing pollution in the watershed between Middle Sound Loop — Porters Neck. Attendees will learn about the project's efforts to improve water quality in the area.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wilmington Housing Authority held a public meeting on Oct. 28 to discuss its plan to demolish and rebuild the aging Hillcrest complex on Dawson Street—between 13th and 16th—with about 500 new affordable and workforce housing units. The first phase will break ground in summer and current neighbors will remain in their homes during construction.  WECT
  • The New Hanover Community Endowment has announced eight new grants totaling more than $17 million to expand health care access, youth services, safe housing and historic preservation in our county. The awards include $5.7 million for Wilmington Housing Authority’s Hillcrest development—funds that will be disbursed in 2026 along with other amounts set for 2025 or 2026.  Port City Daily
  • Cape Fear Community College will host a Veterans Day ceremony to honor military personnel on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in Tabitha’s Courtyard behind the G Building at 411 N. Front St.—if weather is poor, the event will move to room U-170 in Union Station, and veterans will then receive a free lunch after the ceremony.  Port City Daily

  • Area residents are invited to join the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s — Wilmington at UNCW on Saturday, Nov. 1 to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care and research. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. with the Promise Garden ceremony led by FOX Wilmington’s First Alert Weather Forecaster Gabe Ross in memory of his father.  Port City Daily
