- ➤ The three-time Grammy Award-winning Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College on Sunday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. as part of their final farewell tour—ALL THE GOOD TIMES: The Farewell Tour 60 Years of Dirt, mixing reimagined classics and new songs from nearly 60 years of music. - ➤ Minnie Evans: Draw or Die is a documentary about Wilmington artist Minnie Evans that will premiere at Thalian Hall at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7—tickets cost $15 and the screening will include a brief classical music performance followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Linda Royal and Evans’ family. - ➤ Dr. Christopher Barnes, New Hanover County Schools Superintendent, said the meal program will keep running during the shutdown—USDA funding will reimburse October meals and a SNAP delay will not affect free or reduced-price eligibility. - ➤ County experts say fallen leaves in Wilmington yards give insects and amphibians a natural place to overwinter and return nutrients to the soil. Homeowners can rake leaves into garden beds, shred them on lawns, or compost excess leaves—helping reduce waste and support local gardens. Wilmington Star-News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Josh Stein announced nearly $18 million will be directed to state food banks to help families facing shortages after SNAP benefits were suspended for November + state funds will support food services. Donations come from partners including AmeriHealth Caritas + the David & Nicole Tepper Foundation. WECT
- ➤ Starting in December, the NCDMF will require recreational fishers to report kept fish—flounder, red drum, striped bass, spotted seatrout, and weakfish—through an online form or an upcoming iPhone app; commercial fishers will continue reporting sales through licensed seafood dealers, and the rule covers coastal, joint, and inland waters adjacent to coastal fishing areas. - ➤ The ILM Aerospace Foundation launched a food drive on Friday, Oct 31 to help government workers and their families during the shutdown.
