BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pine Valley Market will open a new cafe and catering business in early November in the former Sweet n Savory Cafe space near Wrightsville Beach — the location at 1611 Pavilion Place will offer a full-service restaurant and bar as well as a retail market with grab-and-go items, and a ribbon cutting is planned for Nov. 11.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center announced that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform on May 10th at 7:00 p.m. as part of their farewell tour—tickets are available through the center.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wilmington Fire Department opened Station 6 in the Riverlights community Saturday afternoon to reduce travel times for emergency calls. Firefighter Garry Stevenson said the new facility allowed a response in about two minutes—improving service for local residents.  WECT
  • The Wilmington Fire Department opened Fire Station 6 at 4455 River Road + the new, state-of-the-art facility features a dine-in kitchen, dormitories, lounge, and training rooms + and it will have an engine company of four firefighters to support rapid emergency response for the Riverlights area.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina chapter held its annual walk to end Alzheimer’s at UNCW on Saturday, where over 900 participants carried flowers representing their personal ties to the disease + the event raised $194,000 by just after lunchtime to help fund research, early detection, and quality care while aiming for a goal of $250,000.  WWAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hoggard football beat Ashley 38-8 on Oct 31 to complete a perfect 10-0 regular season and win their third straight conference title. Coach Craig Underwood said the team will now prepare for the state playoffs starting Nov 7.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Hoggard's Riley Kiziah won the 8A boys cross-country state championship in Kernersville on Nov. 1 with a time of 15:39.71 and Topsail's Grayson Dill won the 7A title with a time of 15:32.15—both wins mark the first state crowns for Wilmington runners since 2017.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Anglers gathered at Dutchman Creek Park on Nov. 1 during the 47th annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament and offloaded their catch while officials and scientists measured the fish and recorded tournament data.  Wilmington Star-News
