COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Si Cantwell—an event organizer for the Southeast North Carolina Veterans Parade—stated the event will honor veterans this weekend.  WECT
  • New Hanover County will host several events this November to remember the 127th anniversary of the 1898 Wilmington Massacre and Coup d’état, featuring a jar exhibit, film preview, Zoom talks and a wreath laying scheduled from Nov 5 to Nov 14 — each event will let locals learn about their past. County organizers say the programs will include local talks and expert discussions to honor those affected by the tragic events.  WECT
  • In November, all schools in the Pender County Schools district will host a food drive to collect non-perishable items like cereal and canned goods for families facing food insecurity. The drive will support local organizations amid delayed SNAP benefits — collection bins will be set up at every school.  Port City Daily
  • Local beekeepers will display their honey and wax products at the first New Hanover County Beekeepers Association Honey Show at Halyburton Park on November 15. The event features 25 competition categories — judges will provide feedback to help producers improve techniques and encourage local support for natural products.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • CFCC’s Department of Commercial, Fine, and Performing Arts will present A Charlie Brown Christmas on December 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wilson Center—patrons may donate non-perishable food or household items and enjoy original artwork by student Addison Brown during the show.  WWAY
  • The Kindred Spirit mailbox sits on Bird Island Reserve near Sunset Beach — placed between the beach and the marsh, it holds a journal and pen for visitors to write their thoughts. People must walk 1.5 miles from 40th Street Beach Access to reach this unique spot.  Wilmington Star-News
  • CFCC invites Wilmington residents to see its annual production of A Charlie Brown Christmas—featuring Vince Guaraldi's jazz score and original artwork by Graphic Design students. The show will offer a festive experience and highlight the school's creative talent.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An invasive ant from East Asia has spread across the state and poses a triple threat to local residents, homes, and ecosystems — its sting can cause a severe allergic reaction compared to fire ants. Experts say traditional baits do not work with this hard-to-spot insect — rising warmth may help it spread further.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sunset Beach is asking local residents for input on improving the NC 904 Corridor — the study will focus on addressing traffic, safety, and walking and biking amenities. The town is working with GSATS, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and Brunswick County and will present a final plan to the town council and the GSATS Transportation Advisory Committee when the study is complete.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Cancer Society’s third annual ‘Shuck Cancer Wilmington’ event will take place this Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Bluewater Waterfront Grill, where community and business leaders will gather for live entertainment, food pairings, and auctions to raise money for cancer research and support programs — individual tickets will cost $100 and couple tickets $175, with guests encouraged to bring non-perishable food.  WWAY
