COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College's student food pantry holds a Thanksgiving Food Drive to collect nonperishable items like boxed macaroni and cheese, canned gravy, biscuit mix, instant mashed potatoes, powdered milk, and cranberry sauce. Donations can be dropped off until Nov. 14 at room 108 of the Health Sciences and library building — students in need may request support online by Nov. 7.  FOX Wilmington
  • Skywatch Bird Rescue in Wilmington took in four baby barn owls from a nest found by a hunter on Halloween and is now asking for sponsors and donations to help cover care costs up to $1,900 per bird—supporting replacement nest boxes for next season. The rescue is also asking for game meat donations to cover increased raptor care this winter.  WECT
  • Broomtail Brewing will host a Kentucky Derby-themed dog adoption fundraiser on Nov. 8 from noon to 4 at its Wilmington location — featuring adoptable dogs, live music, contests, and a vendor fair. The fundraiser, in partnership with NC Seaside Animal Rescue, will include a food truck, raffle, and dog race — with all proceeds supporting rescue pets.  WECT
  • Downtown Wilmington will host the Southeast North Carolina Veterans Parade on Saturday, November 8 with a 10 a.m. pre-show at Thalian Hall and an 11 a.m. parade from Hanover Street to Market Street—veteran groups and high school bands will join the event to honor military service members with a Veterans Celebration and Information Fair.  WWAY
  • The New Hanover Beekeepers Association will host its inaugural regional Honey Show later this month (Nov. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) at the Events Center at Halyburton Park. The free event will feature products from local beekeeper clubs and non-beekeepers including arts and crafts, food, and beeswax creations.  WECT
  • The Wilmington Kiwanis Club will hold its 51st annual Pancake Day fundraiser this weekend at Hoggard High School’s cafeteria from 7 a.m. to noon, serving an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage meal available for dine-in, takeout + drive-up with tickets that include a raffle entry for a Gents Seiko Divers Watch from Kingoff’s Jewelers. All proceeds will go to support local youth programs such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, Key Clubs at high schools, Builders Clubs at middle schools, the Kiwanis Cottage, Cribs for Kids, Books for Kids, and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard + club president Steve Woodaed said the event has a long history of aiding children in the community.  WECT

  • Wrightsville Beach hosted the 12th Annual Taste of Wrightsville Beach on Saturday and organizers announced winners for savory and sweet dishes—Solstice Kitchen won best overall savory while The Green House Restaurant took best overall sweet, with additional awards given in runner-up and specialty categories.  WWAY
  • Surf City will host a music festival featuring The Beach Boys — a group known for classic hits — and Josh Turner later this month. Festival organizers shared details in a studio interview today and said local residents can expect a lively event with multiple acts.  WECT
  • UNCW will host its unDISCIPLINEd 3 Arts Faculty Showcase on Tuesday, November 18th at 5 p.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall, featuring faculty from Art and Art History, Creative Writing, Film Studies, Music and Theatre; a reception will follow in the Cultural Arts Lobby.  WECT

  • NCWorks will host a hiring event at River Road Animal Hospital in Southport on Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Another event will take place at the Brunswick County NCWorks Career Center on Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.—the Roger Bacon Academy event includes a free Customer Service Excellence Workshop from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and resume assistance.  WECT

  • Wilmington residents Krystal Hastings and James Patana won a $1 million lottery prize after buying a scratch-off ticket at a Harris Teeter on Parker Farm Road+ each is planning to buy a house using their $300K share from the $600K lump sum option.  WWAY
