COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wilmington Fire Department is hosting its annual food drive in support of Nourish NC from Nov. 1 to Dec. 12 with drop-off tubs at every fire station and Skyline Center—last year the program collected a record-breaking 1,700 pounds of food and it aims to exceed that total this year.  WWAY
  • Feast Down East will host its Oyster Roast fundraiser on Dec. 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Food Hub in Burgaw’s Historic Train Depot to support programs fighting food insecurity and helping local farmers with SNAP matching and fresh food markets — tickets cost $100 and include admission, one drink, oysters, and food.  WECT
  • Local law enforcement teams from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Wilmington Police Department will face off in a charity basketball game at Wilmington Christian Academy on Nov. 21 to support the New Hanover DSS Foster Pantry. Entry is free (doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7 p.m.)  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Leanne Morgan’s Netflix special Unspeakable Things, filmed at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center from June 19 to June 21, reached the #1 spot on Netflix after four sold-out shows. Local officials praised the venue—Wilmington’s own premier cultural site—for boosting the city's profile for top productions.  WWAY
  • Residents in Wilmington can vote online from 5 a.m. on Nov. 6 until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 23 to choose their favorite holiday event among 18 options that include boat flotillas, tree lightings and parades — the poll gives locals a chance to decide which event is best.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Thalian Hall Cinema series has replaced the old Cinematique film series and now offers more movie times and choices while keeping its classic feel. Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke, screened on Nov. 6 and is showing again today + a documentary about artist Minnie Evans debuts today as Wilmington gears up for a weekend of festivals and art exhibits.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Comedian Leanne Morgan's Netflix special "Unspeakable Things," filmed during sold-out shows from June 19 to 21, reached the top spot on Netflix and placed the Wilson Center in the national spotlight. CFCC officials noted the achievement highlights the venue's growing reputation (CFCC President Jim Morton praised the staff) and the effort of the production teams (which brought together local talent and Netflix professionals).  WECT
  • The 25th Annual Amigos International Festival Latino returns to Wilmington this weekend with food, music, dancing, and family fun at Ogden Park (615 Ogden Park Drive). The free event will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday and offers shuttle service from Enoch Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The New Hanover County school board approved next year’s traditional calendar today and began reviewing new funding options for preschool and a revised scholarship program after a loss of a federal grant. The board also passed a three-year memorandum with 100 Black Men with a 5—1 vote, with one member dissenting over the group's support focus.  WHQR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wilmington City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to reject Chemours' plan to expand its Fayetteville Works plant over worries that increased PFAS pollution could raise water treatment costs for local residents. Council member Salette Andrews, who introduced the resolution after losing her son to cancer (PFAS exposure during his Army service), said the decision holds the company accountable for its past pollution.  WECT
  • City workers assembled a large Christmas tree at Water and Market streets in downtown Wilmington on Nov. 5 — the display now brings festive cheer to the area.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Today, as UNC meets Kansas at 7 p.m. on ESPN for their 14th game, fans remember Michael Jordan’s first game with the Tar Heels nearly 44 years ago at Charlotte Coliseum where he scored 12 points in a 74-67 win. His debut under coach Dean Smith started a winning tradition that led to a national title.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Former NC State and UNCW coach Kevin Keatts will debut as a studio analyst for ESPN and ACC Network today during the Kansas vs. North Carolina game at 7 p.m.—he led NC State from 2017 to 2025 and coached UNCW from 2014 to 2017.  FOX Wilmington
