COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cape Fear Book Festival Cover-to-Cover Sale will be held November 16 at the Main Library in downtown Wilmington from 2—5 p.m. The event will feature more than 65 vendors selling books and literary items and will include a free gift wrapping station for shoppers.  New Hanover County
  • Wilmington fire officials urge residents to use space heaters carefully as cold weather arrives. They recommended keeping heaters on flat surfaces with a three-foot clear zone and plugging them directly into the wall & noted that New Hanover County families can apply for help with heating costs.  FOX Wilmington
  • Feast Down East, a local nonprofit, announced an expanded 'Fresh Bucks' benefit that will give SNAP recipients $50 in free food at the Local Motive Mobile Farmers’ Market & is funded by the Anonymous Trust & Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. The program comes as federal food assistance faces instability and follows a 2024 record of more than $2 million in community impact & 249,000 pounds of local food moved into the region.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday morning, a wreath-laying ceremony took place at 1898 Memorial Park to mark the 127th anniversary of the 1898 coup and massacre in Wilmington—community officials, UNCW leaders and local residents joined in singing Lift Every Voice and Sing to remember the tragic past.  WHQR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College and Campbell University signed a new transfer articulation agreement that gives CFCC students a direct pathway to enroll at Campbell University. The agreement offers early transfer support—academic advising, financial aid counseling, and orientation—and requires students to maintain a 2.0 GPA, complete an associate degree, and apply within one academic year.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced extended hours and a new program to support veterans starting today—this service will use the NCServes call line and a coordination center managed with Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry and Vaya Health to help veterans access health care, housing, employment, and peer support services. The initiative aims to reduce barriers to care for North Carolina’s 600,000 veterans.  WWAY
  • The Wilmington Chapter of Breakthrough T1D is hosting its Walk for a Cure event in Wilmington next month + the event will raise awareness for type 1 diabetes.  WECT
  • Lower Cape Fear LifeCare renewed its level five 'We Honor Veterans' status today to earn the highest honor from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs—proof that it continues to provide veteran-centered care, requiring annual resubmission for excellence.  WWAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • New Hanover boys soccer won a 2 to 1 game over Fuquay-Varina at Legion Stadium on November 10 and advanced to the state playoff quarterfinals for the first time since 2021. The Wildcats will face the Screaming Eagles in Round 4 — set for November 13.  Wilmington Star-News
