COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A nonprofit program run by New H.O.P.E. CDC in partnership with United Way of Cape Fear will help families with school children in New Hanover County pay for past-due rent, utilities and car repairs—applications open on November 17 and funds are limited.  Port City Daily
  • Skywatch Bird Rescue announced that community donations surpassed $5,000 to cover its monthly power bill — the funds will also pay for housing and daily treatment for pelicans until spring. This support comes after the nonprofit faced increased summer expenses to care for additional birds.  WECT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A gas leak near S 13th Street and Ann Street forced evacuations on November 12—WFD quickly secured the leak so residents could soon return home.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A $23.5m beach nourishment project will begin before Thanksgiving to pump about 1.6 million cubic yards of sand on Carolina and Kure beaches to slow severe erosion—workers will start dredging on Nov. 16 with sand reaching Carolina Beach on Nov. 23 and Kure work beginning in February.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority board passed a resolution on November 12 to oppose Chemours’ plans to expand operations at its Fayetteville Works Facility due to PFAS concerns. The board noted it spent $43 million on a carbon filtration system (at the Sweeney Water Treatment Plant) and urged the NC Department of Environmental Quality to deny the expansion application.  WECT
  • Pender County officials buried a time capsule at the courthouse in Burgaw on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. to honor the county's 150th anniversary. The capsule will remain sealed until 2075—capturing a piece of today’s history for future generations.  FOX Wilmington
  • Wilmington International Airport will host a public information workshop on the FAA-funded Part 150 Noise Study next week at Snipes Academy, with a presentation at 5 p.m. and a workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.—community members can view study boards, ask questions, and offer feedback. The study will measure current and projected aircraft noise levels and suggest ways to reduce noise impacts in residential areas.  WECT

SPORTS NEWS

  • After battling stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma and undergoing strong chemotherapy, Blake Taylor was promoted last summer to interim coach of UNCW’s men’s golf team. His return has lifted local spirits—players now look to him as a guiding force for the 2025–26 season.  FOX Wilmington
  • Ashley High School flag football team won last year's inaugural fall state championship and will compete in the first round of state playoffs today—hoping to secure a second title.  WECT
