  • Hundreds of couples attended the Wilmington Wedding Expo at Aloft Coastline Center where bridal vendors offered rings, dresses, food, and music — giving soon-to-be newlyweds many options in planning their special day.  WWAY
  • The owner of 709 North Eighth St. in Wilmington learned that her great-great grandfather—a former slave—bought the land in 1885.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local author Emily Colin spoke at the WECT digital studio about her adult romantasy, Fate and Fury, and offered writing tips for new novelists—she led a workshop at the Cape Fear Book Festival on Nov. 15—and hosted a booth at the Cover-to-Cover book sale on Nov. 16.  FOX Wilmington
  • Wilmington residents have celebrated the season for many years with traditions such as Enchanted Airlie at Airlie Gardens, neighborhood parades, boat flotillas and historic home displays. Each event reflects a chapter in our local holiday history—showing the evolution of festive celebrations over time.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Graystone Inn is a historic mansion built in 1905 and finished in 1906 that once served as the Bridgers family home before its sale to American Legion Post 10 in the 1940s — it has later been used as business offices, an event venue and a bed and breakfast that locals cherish as a landmark.  WWAY

  • Voting is open for the StarNews Student of the Week from Nov. 17 to Nov. 21—voters must cast their ballots by 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20. High school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated Gauge Orbea, Phoebe Schroeder and Caroline Smist for their strong academic and extracurricular records.  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 150 Venus flytraps were harvested for relocation Sunday morning in Boiling Spring Lakes—volunteer Amber Townsend said illegal poaching and nearby development threatened the rare plant's survival—raising concerns for its future.  WECT
  • Carolina Beach began the re-nourishment project Sunday with Army Corps Engineers using bulldozers and pipes to pull sand and shape more than 6 miles of coastline from the north end to Kure Beach—Mayor Lynn Barbee said residents can track progress online while keeping parts of the beach open. The project is expected to last four to five weeks weather permitting.  WWAY
