- ➤ The NC Department of Environmental Quality extended the public comment deadline for the Wilmington Harbor deepening project from Dec. 5 to Dec. 20—allowing locals to send in their views on the plan by the US Army Corps of Engineers to widen the Cape Fear River channel for larger ships. Critics say the project may lead to increased saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion, and a decision will come by Jan. 5. Port City Daily

- ➤ New Hanover County Fire Rescue urged residents to follow safety tips for holiday celebrations—checking smoke alarms, keeping cooking areas safe, and using decorations that prevent fire hazards. New Hanover County
- ➤ Wave Transit received $1.02 million from the FTA's Low or No Emission Grant to purchase six new shuttle buses that will replace older diesel models with compressed natural gas — the upgraded buses will mainly serve Seahawk Shuttle routes as ridership increased. WECT
