COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Paws Place Dog Rescue is seeking funds to complete its storm shelter—unexpected costs arose from Brunswick County requirements.  WECT
  • Tom Meyer, a resident of Leland's Stoney Creek Plantation, had his home severely damaged by recent storms + he now must rebuild his life from the damage.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The William H. Craig Race For Life will return to Wilmington next month—runners can join a 5K or 10K route to participate in the community event.  WECT
  • Noey Carias, a single mother in Calabash, received her new home from Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity after a 10-year journey that began when she moved from California+ she worked two jobs and completed 300 hours of sweat equity to improve her credit while living in cramped income-based apartments. Her daughters inspired her to keep pushing forward, and local Habitat volunteers celebrated her success.  WECT
  • The Diaper Bank of North Carolina — Lower Cape Fear started in a church basement and now works from a larger facility to help families pay for diapers amid rising costs and growing birth rates in the area. Director Julie Bowling said new grant funds and a mobile van will boost its efforts by reaching more families and offering larger sizes as needed.  WHQR
  • William H. Craig Race For Life returns to Wilmington next month with 5K and 10K races set for Dec. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the UNCW Greene Track — registration costs are $45 for the 5K and $50 for the 10K. Proceeds will support programs such as YMCA Girls on the Run, STRIDE, Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Bill Craig Memorial Scholarship honoring Dr. Bill Craig’s legacy.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wilmington Choral Society is celebrating 75 years with a concert at The Wilson Center on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.—over 90 singers will perform both sacred and secular pieces including the Hallelujah Chorus.  WWAY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The American Farm Bureau Federation reported that the average Thanksgiving meal cost dropped 5% and retailers like Walmart, Aldi, Food Lion and Harris Teeter are offering bundle deals; experts advise shoppers to compare prices—planning shared menus to help avoid overspending and waste.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission received preliminary bird flu test results from sick geese near Wilmington last week—officials say USDA lab confirmation is needed and advise bird and pet owners to take precautions.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Carolina Beach announced that 2026 Freeman Park annual permits will go on sale Dec. 1 at a discounted rate of $110 plus fees for in-person purchases until Dec. 31—full-price permits of $225 plus fees will be available starting Jan. 1, 2026 and must be picked up in person.  WWAY
  • The City of Wilmington has announced free street parking in downtown from Nov 27th through Nov 30th—parking rates will return to normal on Dec 1st.  WECT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Chef Cameron Garvey from Pinpoint Restaurant visited the WECT Kitchen to share his sausage stuffing recipe—featuring bread, sausage, and herbs—for a new twist on a Thanksgiving staple dish.  WECT
  • Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 27 will see Wilmington restaurants open with special menus and holiday packages, and diners are urged to call ahead for reservations. Community groups will also host free meals and potluck events for those in need—volunteers and donations are encouraged.  Port City Daily
