COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilmington will host a range of Thanksgiving weekend events—ranging from art shows and comedy acts to concerts and a magic show—as locals gather to celebrate the season. The weather will bring cooler conditions on Friday and Saturday with highs near 50 and near freezing lows, then a warmer Sunday with highs near 70 and a slight chance of rain.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Porters Neck community launched Harvest for Heroes today to serve full Thanksgiving meals to eight firehouses so on-duty firefighters can share in the holiday—organizers said they plan to continue the program in future years.  WWAY
  • Catholic Charities of the Cape Fear Region launched a free mobile laundry service in partnership with First Baptist Church and the Harrelson Center to help homeless people, and the service has completed about 300 loads since it started in August. The laundry unit operates Tuesday evenings through Wednesday morning and can move based on community needs — restoring dignity by connecting clients with additional services.  WWAY

  • Norah Giroux drowned during a June 2023 family vacation in Southport when she wandered into her grandparents’ gated pool—her parents performed CPR at Wilmington Hospital and chose to donate her organs to help another child, even as they grieved their loss.  WWAY

  • Mayfaire Town Center is gearing up for Black Friday with over 100 retailers offering doorbuster sales and discounts of 40 to 50% to attract shoppers after Thanksgiving — the center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Black Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.  WWAY
  • Wine retailers in Southeastern North Carolina face a 15% tariff on European wines imposed in August—Market House Beer and Wine saw a sales boost while warnings suggest prices on some European wines may rise up to 20% in the new year. Wendy's Wine House has reported no significant changes and advises customers to try domestic alternatives—locals are encouraged to stock up now.  WECT
