COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Staff and volunteers at The Healing Place served hundreds of Thanksgiving meals (featuring turkey and trimmings) to anyone in need, offering a vital local service. The addiction treatment center, which has offered holiday meals since opening in 2023, runs drive-through food distributions twice a month (with local food bank support).  FOX Wilmington
  • Eligible families with children at Virgo Preparatory Academy, Freeman Elementary School, Snipes Elementary School, Gregory Elementary School, Williston Middle School, Forest Hills Elementary School and New Hanover High may apply for help with past-due rent, overdue utility bills and necessary car repairs through the HOPE in School Zones program. The program started on November 17th and is run by HOPE CDC in partnership with United Way of Cape Fear and funded by The Endowment — families are urged to apply quickly as funds are limited.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Several roads will be closed for the Calabash Christmas Parade on Dec. 5 – closures on Beach Road, River Road and Oak Street from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. will lead to delays and detours along the parade route ending at Riverview Drive.  WECT
  • WRAAP will hold its seventh annual Cruisin for Kids charity car raffle on Dec. 6 at noon at D and E Mitsubishi of Wilmington, with $10 tickets and prizes including a new 2025 Mitsubishi Mirage, $1000 for second place, and $500 for third; participants need not be present to win and out-of-state winners will have two weeks to claim prizes — supporting nonprofits and community organizations nationwide.  WECT

  • The Fork 'N' Cork in downtown Wilmington opened its doors on Thanksgiving to anyone celebrating alone as part of its second annual Cluster Fork, offering $15 plates with a half-off discount for first responders and free meals for those in need — a tribute to the late James Smith. Owner Diane Smith hopes to grow the tradition by inviting nearby businesses to join the celebration.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southeastern NC hosts a busy holiday weekend of events as the Cape Fear Habitat Turkey Trot took place on Thursday with Poplar Grove Plantation’s Merry and Bright beginning today at 5 p.m.—Local organizers also offer tree lightings and community markets to bring festive cheer to the region.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USPS has set mail-by dates so that holiday gifts arrive on time—first-class mail and ground by Dec. 17, Priority Mail by Dec. 18, and Priority Mail Express by Dec. 20. New high-speed sorting machines in Wilmington help process more packages and the postal service advises using new, sturdy boxes for safe delivery.  FOX Wilmington

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at MedNorth Health Center now prescribe books during checkups under the Reach Out and Read program— a national effort to boost early reading— in 10 local clinics, including both MedNorth sites. Barnes & Noble in Wilmington is collecting books this holiday season to help build home libraries.  WECT
  • Residents in Wilmington are encouraged to take intentional walks on local trails to boost fitness and lower stress as forests release natural oils that help reduce inflammation and improve sleep. Experts advise starting with short, comfortable walks (like those at Longleaf Park Trail or Brunswick Nature Park) while focusing on proper posture and relaxed steps to ensure safe and restorative benefits.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Provision Company in Southport has been named one of the top 15 seafood dives in the U.S. by AARP for its fresh shrimp and coastal charm. This seasonal restaurant—located at 130 Yacht Basin Drive on the Intracoastal Waterway—will close after Dec. 14 and reopen mid-March.  Wilmington Star-News
