COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topsail Island will host a flotilla on Saturday, Dec. 13 with boats departing Bush Marina at 5 p.m. to reach Soundside Park at 6 p.m. where judges award prizes, while a market (free admission) runs from noon to 6 p.m. featuring food trucks and Mr. and Mrs. Claus.  Port City Daily
  • StarNews readers voted for Southport holiday events, with the Fire Department's Light Up the Night Parade leading over 85 percent of votes and set for 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 12 while the Winterfest craft festival is planned for Dec. 13 and Enchanted Airlie quickly sold out.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC is hosting weekly pop-up markets in Cape Fear to help residents facing SNAP cuts. The events will run through December and into the new year in Wilmington + serve as a key food resource.  WWAY
  • New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is holding its 6th annual Boston Butt fundraiser to support the K9 unit. Orders cost $40 (each) and must be placed by Dec. 17, with pick up from 3 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 23 at 7230 Myrtle Grove Road.  WWAY
  • St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Wilmington will host its 5th annual A Classical Christmas fundraiser concert on Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. The free event benefits A Safe Place and features holiday classics including Twas the Night Before Christmas and I Wonder as I Wander.  WWAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Advanced Glazings, a Canadian glass technology firm, plans to expand its Wilmington operations with a new campus housing technology companies Protocase + 45 Drives. The expansion will create more than 500 jobs and tap local talent from UNCW and Cape Fear Community College.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in Wilmington can enjoy holiday events this weekend, including a candlelit historic tour, festive ballets, film screenings and parades along downtown and Carolina Beach. Some events started on Dec. 3 while others will take place through Dec. 7.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCW Fall 2025 commencement ceremonies will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Trask Coliseum. Graduates will begin at 9 a.m. with ceremonies later; doors open one hour before each event and livestreams start one hour early (viewable online) with parking in Trask Lot (overflow at Hamilton Lot).  University of North Carolina Wilmington
  • Project Spark opened a new facility in Wilmington to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities access local employment services. The initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration, is one of 10 locations planned across North Carolina + additional sites will open through 2026.  WECT
  • Tun's family is suing the school district after a student was ruled ineligible for sports, and attorneys for all sides presented arguments Wednesday morning at a Laney High hearing. Judge Ricardo Jensen is reviewing the case while a decision on the appeal is expected by mid-December.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled over one million bags of shredded cheese sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Publix & Aldi after finding possible metal fragments that may cause temporary health issues. North Carolina customers should check labels on low-moisture part-skim mozzarella and Italian-style blends.  WWAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNCW men's basketball rallied with eight final free throws to edge Marshall 70-69 at Trask Coliseum on Wednesday in a hard-fought comeback win. The victory extends their home winning streak to seven games and sets up two Saturday games on Dec. 20 and 27 viewable on The CW.  WWAY
