CULTURE NEWS

  • Fans of 'One Tree Hill' often visit a well-known bench in downtown Wilmington that became a gathering spot during the show's run (2003-12). Locals see the bench as a simple reminder of the city's pop culture legacy.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Carolina Beach hosted the annual Island of Lights Christmas Flotilla where seven boats competed under challenging weather as they sailed from Snow’s Cut Bridge to the boat basin for holiday-themed prizes — four boats dropped out from the original 11 due to the weather conditions.  FOX Wilmington

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wilmington has many local grocery chains but is missing national names like Wegmans, Winn Dixie, Ingles, Albertsons, Safeway, and Sprouts. While Wegmans has announced new stores in North Carolina, no confirmed plans exist for Wilmington, leaving shoppers to wonder if these favorites will come here soon.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Unemployment claims in North Carolina fell last week—new claims dropped to 2,015 from 3,448, according to the Labor Department. Nationwide, claims decreased by 27,000 to a total of 191,000.  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will host its 12th annual dune restoration Christmas tree event on Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Periwinkle Public Beach Access in Carolina Beach to recycle trees and strengthen dunes that protect the beach.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center said its 32,000 sqft New Centre Drive building exploded in August after a driver hit gas lines and will be demolished by contractor SouthCon starting Dec. 9, with demolition expected to take 30 to 45 days as plans for rebuilding with improved safety measures proceed.  WWAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data shows New Hanover County’s median home price fell 6.5% to $435,000 in September compared to August, with single-family homes and condos declining 2.4% and 5.3% from the previous month.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Hundreds of runners took part in the 2025 Wilmington Historic Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K run along historic streets — the event showcased local athletic talent and community support.  Wilmington Star-News
