COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army urges community members to return adopted Angel Tree gifts by Wednesday, Dec. 10 to help Cape Fear Children prepare for Christmas — drop-offs are at Independence Mall, Salvation Army thrift stores, or the Center of Hope on William Booth Drive.  WECT
  • Landfall Foundation hosted its 14th annual Holiday Marketplace yesterday, Dec. 8, at the Country Club of Landfall's Nicklaus Clubhouse (Sun Runner Place) with over 50 local vendors, including Kids Making It and Azalea Festival artist Elizabeth Sheets, offering handmade gifts for a $35 fee to support nonprofit grant programs.  WWAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday morning, more than 600 Duke Energy customers along South 17th Street lost power after a vehicle struck a pole + utility crews continue working to restore service in the area.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indie-pop band Lucius will perform Tuesday, Mar. 31 at 8 p.m. at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington. Tickets will become available to members on Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. and to the public on Dec. 12 at 10 a.m.  WWAY
  • Grammy-nominated band Lucius will perform at the Wilson Center on March 31 at 8 p.m. Ticket sales open for members on Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. and for the public on Dec. 12 at 10 a.m.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will offer a new NC-Certified Community Health Worker course that starts Jan. 6. The course takes place every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the CFCC Downtown Wilmington campus, costs $230, and requires participants (18+, GED, state resident).  FOX Wilmington
  • Cape Fear Community College will offer a new NC-Certified Community Health Worker course starting Jan. 6 at its Downtown campus; the course meets every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $230 (students must be 18+ with a high school diploma or GED).  WECT
  • The UNCW Board of Trustees will meet on Friday, Dec. 12 at 12:30 p.m. to review a proposed 3% tuition increase and facility projects, including DeLoach Hall modernization and Housing Village updates + fee negotiations with local construction firms + planned roadway and tennis facility improvements.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA is set to propose a rule that limits federal wetlands protections to areas continuously connected to permanent water. Local environmentalists fear that many of North Carolina's isolated wetlands may lose safeguards, which could raise flood risks and affect future land use.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NCDHHS received funding for its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help low-income households with heating bills. Households that missed November notifications, including seniors and disabled individuals, can apply starting Wednesday, Dec. 10 or from Jan. 2 until funds run out.  WECT
  • On Dec. 2, Southport officials passed a unanimous resolution urging federal + state agencies to tighten safeguards for a $1.3B Wilmington Harbor deepening project that risks 400 feet of shoreline near Battery Island; the public comment period remains open until Dec.20 to address flooding concerns.  Port City Daily
  • Carolina Beach began testing one-way traffic on Canal Drive between Harper Avenue and Cape Fear Boulevard next to the boardwalk to enhance pedestrian safety; construction started Monday, Dec. 8 and is expected to finish by week's end. Town officials will review the trial through March for possibly permanent changes.  FOX Wilmington

  • Local homes and businesses continue to brighten Wilmington with festive holiday lights and themed displays, which include popular spots like Pizzeria Don Luca + the Meltons’ annual display.
