CULTURE NEWS

  • The WWII Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition will host events throughout 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, featuring warbird flyovers, veterans forums and historical exhibits in Wilmington.  WECT
  • Battleship North Carolina will light up at sunset in December for holiday celebrations, with blue and white on Dec. 20, red and green on Dec. 24 — Dec. 25, and multiple colors on Dec. 31 — Jan. 1. Displays will be seen from Riverwalk, parks, and across Cape Fear River.  WECT
  • Battleship North Carolina will light blue and white on Dec. 20 for the U.S. Space Force anniversary and shine red and green on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The historic ship will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily as its lights add a festive glow to Wilmington.  WWAY
  • Legendary cinematographer Joe Dunton, who boosted local film with his innovative cameras, died Dec. 7 (at 80) in London after a brief illness. He ran Joe Dunton Cameras in Wilmington for decades and lent his expertise to classic movies.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will hold a battery electric vehicle safety course on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Union Station to train students and automotive professionals in safe EV procedures, with registration costing $70.  WWAY
  • North Carolina universities are updating classroom policies to clearly define AI use and academic dishonesty while guiding students through conduct processes. Duke and UNC Wilmington officials say educators aim to help students learn proper AI use while keeping assessments fair.  WHQR
  • CFCC will offer a battery electric vehicle safety course on Jan. 10 at Union Station in downtown Wilmington. Participants will learn essential skills including high-voltage component identification, safe shutdown, and charging system procedures to work safely with fully electric vehicles.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will issue a precautionary boil water advisory for Wrightsville Beach customers on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. as crews replace broken valves affecting about 100 addresses; customers must boil water for 1 minute before use.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pender County will perform fire hydrant flushing for fire flow tests in (Hampstead, Scott's Hill, and Long Creek) areas over the next few weeks. Residents may notice discolored water and low pressure and are advised to run the cold water tap until it clears.  WWAY
  • Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has scheduled a boil water advisory for about 100 customers on Thursday on parts of South Lumina Avenue and Waynick Boulevard in Wrightsville Beach as crews replace broken valves; residents must boil water for one minute for drinking (bathing water remains unaffected) until tests confirm water safety.  WWAY
