COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eden Village of Wilmington has been named Bank of America's 2025 Neighborhood Builder and received a $50,000 grant (over two years) to support its mission of building tiny homes for the disabled and chronically homeless in the area. The funds will cover operational costs and leadership training.  WWAY
  • Hundreds gathered Tuesday at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church to honor Dr. Bertha Todd, who died on Dec. 2. The celebration recognized her work as an educator at Williston and Hoggard High schools and in creating the 1898 memorial, a legacy that continues to inspire local residents.  FOX Wilmington

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Big Ocean Hospitality Group will reopen its coastal restaurant The Sounder in the former Hops Supply Co. space on 5400 Oleander Drive, with dinner beginning Dec. 20-21 and lunch starting Dec. 22-23 — the eatery features a bright interior and a locally inspired menu.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Eggs Up Grill is set to open its new location in Hampstead on Monday, Dec. 22 at 6 a.m. (36 Station Way, Unit A) The locally owned restaurant will serve breakfast daily until 2 p.m. and plans a grand opening celebration with family activities soon.  Wilmington Star-News

CRIME NEWS

  • American Distillation in Navassa pleaded guilty for discharging pollutants including tert-Butyl alcohol into Cape Fear River in violation of the Clean Water Act - owner Andrew Simmons, Jr and former plant manager Barry White also pleaded guilty for related charges.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • CFCC's Wilson Center will host its 9th annual Benny Hill Quartet fundraising concert on January 30 at 7:30 p.m. The free event features jazz tunes and original compositions to support the music program, with tickets opening Monday for members and Tuesday for the public.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 200 third-grade students received new bicycles at a Monday assembly at New Hanover County High School, where high school students shared personal stories on hard work + goal setting to inspire future success.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners unanimously approved the $2.24 million purchase of 28.55 acres along the Cape Fear River's west bank — just north of Battleship North Carolina — on Dec. 16. Officials said the county will take control of the land by year’s end to preserve open and green space.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Nearly 2,000 Duke Energy customers had power restored Tuesday morning in New Hanover County from the Clear Brook Estates area to the Landsdowne Estates area, though the cause remains unknown.  FOX Wilmington

  • Oreo, an 8-year-old Corgi mix with a gentle temperament, is available for adoption this week at the New Hanover County Humane Society in Wilmington (2405 North 23rd Street).  WWAY
