COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several Cape Fear groups host New Year's Eve events on Dec. 31. The Children's Museum runs a craft and confetti event from 9 a.m. to noon, Thalian Hall holds a black-tie gala from 6 p.m., and Kure Beach and Burgaw stage festivities with fireworks and a blueberry drop.  WECT
  • Local venues plan New Year’s Eve events on Dec. 31. The Children’s Museum in Wilmington hosts a New Year’s Noon event from 9 a.m. to noon, Thalian Hall stages formal gala from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. + Kure Beach and Burgaw offer free festivities and a Blueberry Drop.  FOX Wilmington
  • Volunteers from the Cape Fear Volunteer Center and Big Buddy Program wrapped gifts for kids over the weekend (including toys and clothes) and are delivering them today and tomorrow; the center will also serve Christmas Eve dinners for local families.  WWAY
  • The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is delivering 50 mortgage-free homes during its Season of Hope from Dec. 1 to Dec. 24 for Gold Star and fallen first responder families (including Gracen Arslanbas and Lt. D’Erasmo’s family) to honor their service. The program provides lasting holiday support.  WECT
  • Two annual fundraisers are set for Jan. 1. In Wrightsville Beach, Communities in Schools holds the Polar Plunge at Crystal Pier at noon and 12:30 p.m. with entry at $35 + an afterparty, while Surf City hosts the free Dolphin Dip for Share the Table starting at noon.  Port City Daily

  • Southeastern Community College in Whiteville honored chemistry instructor Gary Nealy with the Fall 2025 Faculty/Instructional Staff Meritorious Service Award during a campus ceremony—he is recognized for his dedication in preparing labs and inspiring his students.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hanover County continued its floodplain management efforts to help homeowners get discounted flood insurance rates through the NFIP. The county’s approach involves planning, emergency management and local agencies as part of the Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan.  New Hanover County
  • Leland Town Council approved rezoning 37 acres at Terrapin Landing for the Novant Health Leland Medical Center, after balancing land uses to maintain local housing density. The hospital site — set to open by January 2030 — will begin site preparation in early 2027 to serve the growing northwest area.  Port City Daily
  • The City of Wilmington will offer free downtown parking for the holidays from Wed, Dec. 24 through Fri, Dec. 26. Normal parking rates will resume on Dec. 27.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Wilmington, local safety officials advise residents to follow fire and food safety tips during the holidays. They recommend watering live Christmas trees daily and keeping raw and ready-to-eat foods separate — guidelines shared by national and county experts.  WECT

  • Wilmington residents can look forward to 26 unique activities in 2026 including art classes at the Cameron Art Museum, cocktail events at Blind Elephant + rugby games at Flytrap Downs.
