COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In July 2025, Wilmington's population reached 492,772 (a gain of over 12,000 in one year) according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  Wilmington Star-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • UNCW women's basketball coach Nicole Woods nearly drowned when she rescued her nephew from a rip current at Wrightsville Beach on May 21 (emergency crews revived her after she was unconscious and she now recovers at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center).  Wilmington Star-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two new stores opened on May 27 at Mayfaire Town Center in Wilmington, with Lovesac at 6858 Main Street offering modular furniture and Flip Flop Shops at 917 Town Center Drive providing beach-ready footwear.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington has been named one of MovieMaker Magazine's '50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee' for 2026, highlighting its focus on creative community rather than competition. The 32nd annual event runs Nov. 19-22 downtown and early bird passes are now available.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College's Film and Video Production Technology program will move classes to Cinespace Studios this fall to give students hands-on experience in a working film studio & expand continuing education offerings. CFCC carpentry classes will also use the studio space starting this summer.  FOX Wilmington

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission warns coastal residents to be cautious as alligators become more active during the mating season in May and June (with more people enjoying the outdoors). Officials advise maintaining a safe distance, not feeding alligators, and supervising children near water.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A lane closure was in effect on Cape Fear Memorial Bridge on Wednesday as crews repaired railing damaged in a crash + there is no set timeline for completing repairs.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study from the James Comprehensive Cancer Center finds that women ages 18 to 25 who drink face a higher risk of early-onset breast cancer (researchers say alcohol disrupts hormone levels) and advise careful drinking to reduce risk.  WECT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hoggard girls soccer (19-1-1) faces Myers Park (18-2-3) in the NCHSAA 8A state championship today at 7 p.m. at Durham County Memorial Stadium; viewers can stream the game on the NFHS Network or buy $15 tickets to attend in person.  Wilmington Star-News
