COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will hold a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at its North Campus Safety Training Center (Castle Hayne) to honor the victims, survivors, and first responders of the 9/11 attacks.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington Police held a press conference on Aug.29 to address allegations that Yokeley put narcotic pills in Dairy Queen blizzards given to teens—investigators are continuing their review of the case.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new Prime Video series The Runarounds, created by Jonas Pate from the makers of Outer Banks, is set and filmed in Wilmington—featuring local youth who play real music and learn acting skills. It debuts Monday, September 1 and will include a live concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on September 14.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners on Thursday reversed earlier budget cuts by approving $1.4 million in supplemental funding—restoring full-time nurse positions at every school after parents and board members raised concerns over student safety. The funding comes from the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Fund and follows public outcry over the initial cuts.  Port City Daily
  • WAVE Transit will offer free rides for voters during early voting and on Election Day on Oct. 25, Oct. 26, Nov. 1, and Nov. 4—Wilmington City Councilmember Salette Andrews said the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority approved the plan on Aug. 29.  FOX Wilmington
  • Brunswick County dismissed its lawsuit against contractor Oscar Renda and insurer Zurich American Insurance Company so the insurer can take over completing the Northwest Water Treatment Plant expansion (now 85% complete) and set a firm finish date to serve over 55,000 customers facing PFAS contamination.  Port City Daily
