- ➤ The NC Department of Environmental Quality extended the public comment deadline for the Wilmington Harbor deepening project from Dec. 5 to Dec. 20—allowing locals to send in their views on the plan by the US Army Corps of Engineers to widen the Cape Fear River channel for larger ships. Critics say the project may lead to increased saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion, and a decision will come by Jan. 5. Port City Daily
